The Airfield of Wiener Neustadt
in Picture Postcards

The Wiener Neustadt airfield is the cradle of Austrian aviation. Here at the Steinfeld with its weather-resistant ground, ideal conditions prevailed. Designers tested their designs, spectacular competitions took place and world records were flown. The Emperor came and the military pilots presented themselves to the public for the first time.

In the period from 1910 to 1912, the aviators and aviation pioneers triggered tremendous enthusiasm; on fine days, tens of thousands of spectators came to the airfield. Naturally, there was a huge demand for memorabilia, especially picture postcards. The still quite young medium had to deliver quickly, sometimes faster than the events and weather conditions actually allowed. So sometimes a little "tinkering" was done to meet the demand.

In years of meticulous work, Marcus Zelezny has assembled a very comprehensive collection of more than 400 picture postcards of the Wiener Neustadt airfield. They document its tumultuous development in all its facets, and convey an immediate impression of this great period of aviation that was just beginning. The photo studios and their working methods are also presented in this comprehensive work.

An indispensable work for local historians and local historians, for collectors and aviation enthusiasts alike.
